‘New Old Boots’ is an exploration of the design elements that define human existence, encapsulated in the form of a pair of seemingly ordinary boots. The interplay between functionality and aesthetic has always interested me. By showing a timeworn appearance I wanted to create a piece that speaks to both the transient and enduring aspects of human culture. The rich black marble from Noir de Mazy adds to this narrative.

I love to play homage to classical sculptures and to the remnants of this period, where often only fragments of feet and legs survive the ravages of time. These classical fragments, stripped of their complete forms, evoke a sense of loss and the passage of time, yet they endure as powerful symbols of human presence.

By leaving the legs inside the boots and making the boots walk,  I want to evoke a sense of dislocation and interruption, reminiscent of dismembered classical statues, but with a contemporary twist. The visible absence of the body above the legs challenges the viewer to consider the notion of identity and presence—how much of who we are is defined by where we’ve been and what we’ve worn? It speaks to the vulnerability and impermanence of the human condition, yet also to the enduring spirit that remains rooted in our footsteps.
